The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) is moving toward a fully digital examination system, with plans to introduce online testing beginning with the January 2026 sitting.
The announcement was made in Kingston on Wednesday by CXC Chief Executive Officer Dr Wayne Wesley during a press briefing outlining the council’s short- to medium-term strategy for assessment delivery.
According to Dr Wesley, the transition will see examinations offered electronically, either through full e-assessment or a hybrid model that combines digital and traditional formats. He explained that while the long-term objective is to place all examinations online, flexibility will remain a key feature during the rollout phase.
CXC had previously disclosed its intention to implement electronic assessments from January 2026. At that time, Dr Wesley noted that candidates unable to sit exams online would be accommodated during the May to June examination period, when both paper-based and electronic options would be available.
Meanwhile, Director of Operations at CXC, Dr Nicole Manning, said the council has already been applying flexible assessment arrangements to support affected candidates. She pointed to recent accommodations made for students impacted by flight cancellations linked to United States strikes on Venezuela.
CXC officials say the phased approach is designed to ensure accessibility, continuity, and fairness as the regional examinations body modernises its assessment systems.
