Court Hears Silvera’s Account as He Pleads Guilty in Wife’s Death

Former People’s National Party (PNP) Member of Parliament Jolyan Silvera has admitted responsibility for the fatal shooting of his wife, Melissa Silvera, telling the court the incident followed a heated domestic dispute at their Stony Hill, St. Andrew home in November 2023.

Silvera entered guilty pleas on Monday to manslaughter and using a firearm to commit a felony. The pleas form part of a proposed agreement with prosecutors outlining the circumstances surrounding the shooting inside the couple’s bedroom.

According to details presented in court, Silvera stated that an intense argument developed between the pair on November 10, 2023. During the confrontation, he said his wife accused him of being responsible for the 2017 death of their one-year-old son, Justin, whose body was found in a swimming pool at the family home while Silvera and a household worker were present.

Investigators report that Silvera described being subjected to sustained verbal attacks during the dispute and said he lost control. A physical struggle reportedly followed, during which Melissa Silvera was shot multiple times. Authorities indicate she sustained three gunshot wounds.

The former Western St. Mary MP, first elected in the 2011 general election, moved to plead guilty after giving his account of the incident to prosecutors as part of the plea discussions.

Legal observers note that beyond the manslaughter conviction, the firearm charge carries a significant potential sentence, with penalties ranging from 15 to 25 years in prison.

The prosecution has accepted the manslaughter plea offer, and Chief Justice Brian Sykes is scheduled to determine the next procedural steps when the matter comes before the court on Thursday.

In the immediate aftermath of Melissa Silvera’s death, public condolences were shared after a social media post from PNP President Mark Golding announced her passing. Reports indicate that Silvera later gave differing explanations to relatives and associates about how his wife died, including claims that she succumbed to a medical emergency in her sleep or suffered a fatal fall in the shower.

During the investigation, a senior PNP parliamentarian told police that Silvera had asked him to finance the purchase of a replacement mattress for the bedroom where the shooting occurred. The request was reportedly declined.
