The long-awaited trial of three police officers charged in connection with the 2014 beating death of St. James resident Mario Deane has been postponed once again, as no jurors appeared for duty in the St. James Circuit Court on Monday. A new mention date has been set for November 14, and the officers’ bail has been extended.
Corporal Elaine Stewart and Constables Juliana Clevon and Marlon Grant, who are on trial, face charges of manslaughter, perverting the course of justice, and misconduct in public office. The charges were brought by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) following a years-long inquiry into Deane’s death.
Mario Deane, a resident of St. James, was arrested on August 3, 2014, for possession of a ganja spliff. Allegations state that he was brutally beaten while in custody, suffering severe brain injuries that left him comatose. He died three days later at Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay, sparking national outrage and scrutiny over detainee treatment and custodial practices in Jamaica.
The case, first brought to the court in 2018, has faced multiple delays, hindering the start of the trial for over six years. INDECOM’s investigation and subsequent charges against the officers have kept public interest high, as calls continue for justice and accountability in the high-profile case.
This latest delay marks another setback in a case that has already seen years of postponed hearings.
