ST JAMES, Jamaica : Granville Fatal Shooting — Constable Andrew Wilson, the police officer charged with the murder of Granville resident Latoya ‘Buju’ Bulgin, is expected to have his case formally transferred to the St James Circuit Court on Monday, July 13.
Wilson, who is represented by King’s Counsel Peter Champagnie and attorney Michael Hemmings, appeared before the St James Parish Court on Friday, where Parish Judge Kaysha Grant-Pryce advised him of the pending transfer. His $1 million bail was extended.
The court was informed that the usual committal hearing required to transfer the matter from the parish court to the circuit court will not be held. Prosecutors explained that a nolle prosequi was entered, bringing the parish court proceedings to an end.
It was also disclosed that a voluntary bill is expected to be filed when Wilson appears before the circuit court on Monday, allowing the matter to proceed before the higher court the same day.
Wilson was arrested and charged with murder on June 3 after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, following a ruling on May 29, directed that criminal charges be laid against him.
The charge stems from the fatal shooting of Bulgin on May 17 in Granville, St James.
The incident sparked widespread public outrage after CCTV footage, which circulated on social media, appeared to show a police officer firing at a vehicle driven by Bulgin. Additional footage showing Bulgin’s body being placed into a police vehicle also fueled protests by Granville residents and renewed calls for the implementation of body-worn cameras during high-risk police operations.
Wilson is expected to appear before the St James Circuit Court on Monday for the next stage of the proceedings.
