A man from Claremont, St Ann, was fatally shot during a confrontation with police on Thursday, March 19, 2026, after allegedly engaging law enforcement in a gun attack. Another individual involved in the incident managed to escape.
The deceased has been identified as 29-year-old Nicholas Stewart of Main Street in Claremont. According to reports, Stewart was just days away from celebrating his 30th birthday on March 23.
Information from the police indicates that shortly after midday, members of the St Ann Specialized Operations Unit were conducting investigative activities in the Claremont area. During their operation, they received intelligence suggesting that armed men were occupying a premises along Main Street.
Officers reportedly searched one dwelling on the property and were moving toward another when they encountered two men armed with handguns. The men allegedly opened fire at the police team, prompting officers to take cover. The suspects then fled in separate directions.
One of the men escaped, while Stewart reportedly entered a nearby house. Lawmen pursued him, and during the chase, he is said to have again fired at the officers. The police returned fire, hitting Stewart.
A Browning 9mm pistol, fitted with a magazine containing four rounds, was reportedly recovered at the scene.
Stewart was transported to the St Ann’s Bay Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
