Port-au-Prince, Haiti — The United Nations has sounded the alarm as acute malnutrition surges among Haitian children, with thousands facing starvation amid runaway violence and mass displacement.
In a statement this week, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said children across Haiti are being cut off from food, healthcare, and schools, as gangs tighten their grip and chaos deepens.
The crisis is spiraling out of control due to rampant insecurity and a massive shortfall in aid funding, the agency warned.
According to UNICEF, more than 200,000 children have been screened since January 2025 — but over 21,000 have already been diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition and rushed into emergency treatment.
But that’s just 17% of the nearly 130,000 kids expected to need urgent, life-saving care this year.
Aid workers on the ground say if support doesn’t ramp up immediately, thousands of children could starve to death in silence.
