MONTREAL, Canada — The Canadian government has issued a warning to citizens holding passports with the nonbinary “X” gender designation, cautioning that they may encounter difficulties when entering the United States.
“While the Government of Canada issues passports with a ‘X’ gender identifier, it cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries,” said Global Affairs Canada in its travel advisory.
The warning, published Monday, notes: “You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the ‘X’ gender identifier.”
Since returning to the White House in January, US President Donald Trump has taken steps targeting trans and nonbinary individuals. In his inaugural address, he asserted that there are only “two sexes, male and female.”
Through an executive order, the US State Department sought to stop issuing passports with the “X” gender marker, as well as passports for individuals whose gender differs from their birth sex. However, a court injunction blocked the policy from taking effect, and earlier this month, a US appeals court denied the administration’s attempt to reinstate it.
Between 2019 and 2024, Ottawa issued approximately 3,400 passports featuring the “X” gender identifier.
