Montego Bay, St James — A British woman has been formally charged after she was allegedly caught attempting to smuggle more than $45 million worth of cocaine at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James.
The accused, 28-year-old Rachael Quayle, has been charged with possession of cocaine, dealing in cocaine, attempting to export cocaine, and conspiracy to export cocaine. She is scheduled to appear before the St James Parish Court on Friday.
The charges stem from an incident on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, when Quayle reportedly attempted to board a flight bound for the United Kingdom. During a routine search of her luggage by airport security, 9.5 kilograms (21 pounds) of cocaine were discovered hidden within various food items.
Following the discovery, Quayle was taken into custody. After further investigation and an interview conducted in the presence of her attorney, she was formally charged.
The case has drawn significant attention due to the large quantity of drugs involved, with authorities estimating the street value of the cocaine to be over $45 million. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine if others were involved in the attempted smuggling operation.
Quayle’s court appearance on Friday will likely shed more light on the details of the case and the potential consequences she faces if convicted.
