LONDON — Ethel Caterham, a 115-year-old resident of Surrey, England, has been named the world’s oldest living person following the death of Brazilian nun Sister Inah Canabarro, who passed away at 116.
Caterham, born on August 21, 1909, in the village of Shipton Bellinger, credits her longevity to a simple philosophy: “Never arguing with anyone, I listen and I do what I like,” she said from her nursing home in Camberley.
A life full of adventure has marked her years. At 18, she traveled to India as a nanny and later lived in Hong Kong and Gibraltar with her husband Norman, a British army major. The couple had two daughters before Norman’s death in 1976.
Her care home, Hallmark Lakeview Luxury Care, celebrated her milestone with cake and a “115” tiara. “Your strength, spirit, and wisdom are an inspiration to us all,” the facility said in a statement.
The record for the oldest person ever remains with Jeanne Calment of France, who lived to 122.
