A 25-year-old British national was fined $1.2 million when she appeared before the St James Parish Court on cocaine charges.
The accused, Faina Rwenhamo, a healthcare assistant from Leeds, England, pleaded guilty after being caught in possession of 3.5 pounds of cocaine on June 16 at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James.
Reports indicate that around 3:50 PM, Rwenhamo was about to board a flight destined for Manchester, England, when her suitcases were searched and found to contain the drugs, which were concealed in craft items.
She was subsequently charged with possession of cocaine and fined $400,000 or 30 months in prison. For dealing in cocaine, she was fined an additional $400,000 or 30 days in prison, and for attempting to export cocaine, she was fined another $400,000 or 30 days in prison.
The charge of conspiracy against her was dismissed.
