St Catherine, Jamaica – Gunfire shattered the peace of a wake in Waterford, Portmore, last night, leaving three people nursing gunshot wounds — among them an 18-year-old youth believed to be the intended target.
The brazen attack unfolded shortly before 8:00 p.m. on Elmor Way, spilling over into Canewood Road, sending mourners scrambling for cover.
Reports are that the teenager was on the roof of a house, in the company of another male, when masked gunmen appeared and opened fire without warning. The youth bolted, leaping from the roof in a desperate bid to escape the hail of bullets.
In the chaos, a 75-year-old man was shot in the head and a 73-year-old woman was hit in the arm. A fourth person was also injured in the melee, though not by gunfire.
All four were rushed to hospital, where they remain under treatment.
Member of Parliament for St Catherine South Eastern, Robert Miller, visited the scene to speak with shaken residents. He condemned the attack, declaring that there will be “no haven for criminals” in the constituency.
The Portmore Criminal Investigation Branch is leading the probe.
As of August 9, the St Catherine South Police Division has recorded 35 murders this year — a 39 per cent drop compared to the same period in 2024, when 57 murders were tallied.
