Kingston, Jamaica News: Auto Parts Dealer Fined – A Kingston-based auto parts dealer discovered selling counterfeit oil was fined $250,000 or 30 days in prison when he appeared before the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday.
The accused, 36-year-old Kemar Coke, who operates an auto parts business selling motor vehicle and truck parts as well as retail oil, was charged with unauthorized use of a trademark.
Reports indicate that a team of officers conducted a raid at the premises of Coke’s business, where they seized 265 five-gallon buckets of oil intended for use in motor vehicle engines, transmissions, and gears.
In his defense, Coke reportedly told the police that he purchased the products through an online supplier he believed to be Chevron, which was cheaper than regular sources selling oil.
His lawyer argued that Coke was merely seeking a more affordable source and that the goods had been processed through Customs, a point acknowledged by the judge, who handed down the sentence.
