At least 18 people have been confirmed dead after a passenger ferry carrying more than 350 individuals sank off the coast of the southern Philippines, triggering a large-scale rescue operation.
Reports from Philippine authorities indicate that the vessel encountered difficulties while travelling in waters near Basilan province. A distress signal was reportedly sent before the ferry went under during the early hours of Monday.
Rescue teams drawn from the Philippine Coast Guard, military units, and nearby civilian vessels were swiftly deployed to the area. More than 300 passengers have since been rescued, while several others remain unaccounted for as search and recovery efforts continue.
Survivors were taken to nearby islands and medical facilities for assessment and treatment. Some were treated for injuries and symptoms related to prolonged exposure in the water.
Officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the sinking but noted that investigations are underway to determine what led to the maritime disaster. Authorities also indicated that the ferry had reportedly cleared standard safety checks prior to departure.
Search operations remain active as crews continue to scan the surrounding waters for missing passengers.
