ST JOHN’S, Antigua — 20-year-old Hispanic woman, Angela Mejia, appeared in the St John’s Magistrates’ Court on Monday amid a heavy police presence designed to deter onlookers. Authorities are calling for the immediate imposition of the death sentence on Mejia, who is accused of murdering nine-year-old Chantel Crump, a student at Five Islands Primary School.
During an early morning court session presided over by Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel, Mejia appeared without legal representation. Following her appearance, she was remanded to His Majesty’s Prison, where she has been placed in isolation pending further proceedings. Mejia is scheduled to return to court on June 4.
Police investigations revealed that Mejia admitted to killing Chantel Crump. In a significant development, she also led authorities to the location in Weatherills where the body was discovered last week. According to reports, Chantel was last seen alive last Wednesday as she was being taken in a vehicle while heading home from school. Witnesses noted that the young girl even managed to wave to her friends from the vehicle before disappearing from sight.
The case has sparked outrage across Antigua, with community members and officials demanding swift and severe justice. As police continue to secure the area and ensure public safety, the trial is poised to become a landmark case in the nation’s criminal justice history. Further details of the investigation and court proceedings are awaited as the community grapples with the tragedy.
