Jamaica Crime News, St James: There is now a pall of gloom covering the entire school community at the Anchovy Primary School in Anchovy, St James, following the death of a 9-year-old male student at the school compound on Tuesday, June 12, 2018.
When our news team revisited the scene on Wednesday morning, the entire school population were traumatized and had to be counseled by a team from the Ministry of Education.
9-year-old Easton Stapleton, grade two student of Adam Piece in Ramble, Hanover, lost his life in a freak accident which occurred on the school compound shortly after 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
Our news team learnt that, young Easton was standing close to the perimeter wall on the school compound, when a female teacher who was about to drive home lost control of her vehicle. The vehicle sped backward and crushed the 9-year-old student.
The impact of the crash resulted in two huge holes being formed in the wall and the debris from the crash flew in the air and injured a vendor who was standing close by.
The wounded child and the vendor were both rushed to the hospital where Easton was pronounced dead. The vendor was treated and admitted. The teachers and classmates of the dead student were counseled and comforted by a team from the Ministry of Education.
Special counseling was also given to a number of students who witnessed the entire accident.
Principal of Anchovy Primary, Mrs. Cheryl Mitchell, stated that it is a very unfortunate incident and the entire school community mourns with the parent and family of the dead child. She further stated that a Fun Day which was set for Thursday has been postponed and also students will be sent back home for the remainder of the school day.
