Phoenix, Arizona — A tragic accident in a Phoenix home has left a 5-year-old girl dead after she was allegedly shot by her 9-year-old brother using a rifle belonging to their father, police said.
The incident occurred Tuesday night, and the young girl was pronounced dead at a local trauma center shortly afterward. Authorities identified the rifle as belonging to 33-year-old Irvin Ramos-Jimenez, who has since been arrested for possession of a weapon by a prohibited person.
Police have not yet disclosed where or how the firearm was stored at the time of the shooting.
Phoenix Police Sergeant Robert Scherer emphasized the importance of safe gun storage, urging gun owners to keep all firearms locked and out of children’s reach. “No family should ever have to endure the loss of a child in circumstances like these,” he said in a statement to ABC News.
Gun violence remains a leading cause of death among children in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), unintentional shootings by children are a growing concern. Advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety reports that in 2023 alone, there were over 400 such incidents. So far this year, there have been at least 66 unintentional shootings by minors, resulting in 30 deaths.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Phoenix shooting is ongoing.
