Haitians Detained in Portland: The Portland police report that they detained eight Haitians who arrived in the parish illegally by boat at midnight on Sunday.
According to reports, residents alerted the police about a 20-foot vessel on the Hector River, believed to be transporting illegal immigrants.
An investigation led to the arrest of the eight illegal immigrants, who were later taken to the hospital for a medical checkup.
Investigators believe that several other Haitian nationals may have arrived on the boat and are allegedly at large in the parish.
