Hurricane Melissa school repairs

57 Hurricane Melissa-Damaged Schools Fully Repaired

The Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information says 57 priority-one schools damaged by Hurricane Melissa have been fully repaired.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Kasan Troupe, made the disclosure during a post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House on September 9.

She said another 95 schools are expected to be completed by the end of September, while an additional 34 should be finished by the end of December.

According to Troupe, this would mean approximately 60 per cent of the badly damaged schools will be ready by the end of the first term of the new academic year.

She said schools that suffered severe damage will take up to 24 months to fully complete, as the Government is rebuilding them to improved standards that have been reviewed by the World Bank.

The Ministry has also disbursed $3.05 billion to schools to support operations and nutritional assistance, with another $75 million earmarked for canteen repairs at 275 schools.

On furniture, Troupe said more than 17,000 pieces were distributed before the start of the academic year, with another 8,000 pieces distributed as the new school year got under way. A further 20,000 pieces are being prepared for distribution.

The Government is also spending approximately $1.1 billion on textbooks, including more than $700 million for high schools and over $300 million for primary schools.

Overall, the Ministry plans to invest $3.2 billion in learning resources during the academic year.
