Police have charged 39-year-old bus driver Labbede “Chubby” Carr with the murder of 16-year-old Jadene Gayle, the pregnant teen whose body was discovered near Devon main road in St Mary earlier this month.
Carr, of a Mountain View address in St Andrew, was charged on Saturday after being questioned by investigators in the presence of his attorney. He had been taken into custody as the prime suspect shortly after Gayle’s death.
Gayle’s body, wrapped in a blue tarpaulin, was found by residents who contacted the police. According to investigators, the teen showed signs of strangulation and had multiple abrasions on her body.
It is alleged that Carr and Gayle had been in a relationship since she was 13 and that they had been living together for several years. Gayle was pregnant at the time of her death.
The case has sparked widespread outrage, with community members and advocacy groups demanding justice for Gayle and stronger measures to protect minors from exploitation.
Police have not yet confirmed a court date for Carr, but the investigation remains ongoing. Gayle’s death has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of child protection laws and heightened awareness around the dangers of underage relationships.
