A tragic incident at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Saturday evening has resulted in the death of a young pregnant woman, prompting grief, concern, and an internal investigation by hospital authorities.
The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Marisa Eastman, who was reportedly six months pregnant at the time of her death. Eastman was a patient on the hospital’s female medical ward when she fell from a third-floor window shortly before 7:00 p.m. Her body was later seen in the hospital compound.
Reports indicate that earlier in the day, the young woman had shared a video on social media, during which she apologised to relatives and made statements suggesting self-harm. Following news of her death, distressed family members alleged that negligence on the part of the hospital may have contributed to the incident.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation confirmed the death and outlined the sequence of events leading up to it. According to the hospital, Eastman arrived at the Emergency Department on January 17 with complaints of headaches and unusual behaviour. She was subsequently admitted for medical evaluation.
The hospital said she was assessed by the Internal Medicine team and later referred for a psychiatric evaluation due to behavioural concerns. GPHC noted that psychiatric services were provided and that, at the time of assessment, no suicidal thoughts or psychotic symptoms were identified.
The statement further explained that at approximately 6:55 p.m. on January 18, an alarm was raised indicating that the patient had gone through a window on the female medical ward. Despite an immediate response from hospital staff, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hospital officials have since met with the woman’s family and indicated that psychosocial and psychiatric support has been offered to both relatives and affected staff members. GPHC also confirmed that a full internal investigation is now underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As part of the probe, the hospital will review its patient observation procedures and mental health monitoring protocols, including policies related to suicide prevention, to identify any areas that may require strengthening.
The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation extended its condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased, describing the incident as deeply distressing.
