Kingston, Jamaica – An elderly man, Eric Bonner, is now awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to stealing $2 million in cash from an unsecured vehicle parked outside a supermarket in the Corporate Area.
Bonner appeared before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday to answer to a charge of simple larceny.
According to court documents, the complainant had just withdrawn $2 million from a local bank and proceeded to a nearby supermarket. The cash was reportedly left in the car, which was not securely locked, allowing Bonner to remove the money and leave undetected.
Police say surveillance footage captured Bonner committing the act. However, the video was not yet presented to the court when Bonner voluntarily raised his hand and informed Senior Parish Judge Sanchia Burrell that he wished to plead guilty.
Judge Burrell asked Bonner if he was certain about entering a plea without the presence of his attorney. The elderly man responded, “I don’t want to waste the court’s time.”
Following the plea, Bonner was remanded in custody and is scheduled to be sentenced on October 15.
