KINGSTON, Jamaica — Police constable Noel Maitland on Tuesday told a seven-member jury that he would never have harmed or killed his former girlfriend, social media influencer Donna-Lee Donaldson, who disappeared in July 2022.
Addressing the Home Circuit Court in Kingston through an unsworn statement, Maitland firmly rejected the allegations against him, saying he never harboured violent intentions toward Donaldson. He is currently facing charges of murder and preventing the lawful burial of a corpse.
The defendant described his three-year relationship with Donaldson as one marked by frequent verbal disagreements, mainly surrounding issues involving the mother of his child. According to Maitland, those disputes never escalated beyond arguments, and there was no physical violence at any time.
He told the court that their final disagreement occurred on July 12, 2022, after repeated telephone calls from the mother of his child and concerns raised by Donaldson about a photograph of another woman displayed in his home. Maitland said he chose not to engage during the argument and later went to sleep.
Maitland recounted that he was later awakened by Donaldson, who informed him she was leaving. He said that was the last time he saw her and that she departed the residence that same day.
During his statement, Maitland also maintained that he fully cooperated with investigators throughout the police probe. An unsworn statement allows an accused person to give their account without being placed under oath and cannot be challenged through cross-examination.
Donaldson, who was 24 years old and operated her own business, was officially reported missing on July 13, 2022. Her mother previously testified that she last saw her daughter on July 11, when Maitland collected her from their St Andrew home. She further stated that she spoke with Donaldson on the morning of July 12.
The trial, which began in May 2025, continues before the Home Circuit Court.
