Montego Bay, St James — The Chinese community in Montego Bay has contributed J$1 million to aid the reconstruction of St Mary’s Preparatory and Kindergarten School in Montpelier, following extensive damage caused by Hurricane Melissa.
Located in southern St James, the school suffered severe structural damage during the hurricane, including destroyed classrooms, furniture, teaching aids, and other essential infrastructure. The situation was worsened by looting in the days after the storm, adding to the challenges faced by school administrators and parents.
Speaking on the donation, Dr. Anthony Taylor, principal of St Mary’s, described it as a timely and meaningful gesture that has inspired hope within the school community.
“On behalf of the students, staff, and the wider St Mary’s family, we extend our deepest gratitude to the Chinese community for their generous support,” Dr. Taylor said. “This contribution represents not only financial assistance but also solidarity and a shared commitment to the future of our nation’s children. It strengthens our resolve to rebuild, restore, and emerge stronger.”
The funds will be used for urgent structural repairs, replacement of damaged learning materials, and the restoration of a safe and nurturing environment for students.
Zipping Chen, president of the Fujian Association of Jamaica and a representative of the Chinese community, emphasized that the donation is part of a wider relief effort across the island to assist schools and vulnerable groups affected by Hurricane Melissa.
“Jamaica is home to us,” Chen stated. “In times of difficulty, it is important to support the communities that have welcomed us for generations. By helping this school rebuild, we are investing in the future of Jamaica through education.”
Local councillor Javin Baker, representing the Cambridge Division, commended the contribution and the spirit of partnership demonstrated by the Chinese community.
“This generous support highlights the power of community collaboration,” Baker said. “Rebuilding our schools is vital not just for education but also for the stability and confidence of our communities. I encourage other organizations to follow this example.”
School officials have pledged to maintain full transparency and accountability in the use of the donation as they work toward reopening fully restored facilities for students.
