Jamaica News, February 21, 2018 – Westmoreland Records 20 Murders:
Westmoreland, Jamaica (Mckoy’s News) – Since the start of 2018, a total of 20 persons were murdered throughout the parish of Westmoreland. The police in the parish have now stepped up patrols in and around several volatile communities.
The parish of Westmoreland ended the year 2017 with 143 persons murdered, it was also the first parish in Jamaica to record a murder in 2018. The police have indicated that they are faced with great challenges, based on the number of grounds they have to cover from each Police Departments when an incident is reported.
According to the police, Westmoreland is the only parish which faces the grave challenge of dealing with gunmen who travels on motorcycles. A large number of shootings which took place in the parish were carried out by armed men travelling on motorcycles.
As a result of the increase in shootings, the police in Westmoreland have extended their highway search operations, in a bid to clamp down on motorcycle gunmen.
With a record of 20 murders in such a short period, Westmoreland is now the leading western parish in murders, way ahead of St. James, Hanover and Trelawny.
