Jamaica News: Olympian Warren Weir is being heavily criticized on social media for what some deem to be discourteous behaviour in a viral video.
The ordeal happened in Trelawny, was filmed by the athlete and shared on social media.
Throughout the video, the athlete insisted he was stopped because he drove a nice car and the officers weren’t doing their jobs properly because they took too long to ask him for identification.
Weir was subsequently ticketed for excessive tinting.
It was further revealed that he had an outstanding traffic ticket from January, however, checks by the officer to determine if there was a summons issued for him, turned up negative.
The matter also drew commendation from the police high command.
A statement from the high command stated that, “ The high command is pleased with the level of professionalism shown by the officers, in a situation that disrespectfully challenged their authority…the team exemplified the fundamentals of excellent customer service, standards by which the organization expects all officers to interact with the public.”
According to the police the incident highlights the hostility faced by the police on a daily basis when conducting public safety operations.
Citizens were also reminded to comply with instructions and not to obstruct the police when carrying out their duties.
