A great mileage for an outstanding years of work, as Edward Enninful is now British Vogue’s first black editor in chief.

After months of speculation, Edward Enninful OBE, the British fashion stylist and current Creative and Fashion Director at America’s W magazine, will replace outgoing editor Alexandra Shulman effective 1st August 2017,  and will be the Vogue’s first black editor in chief.

Enninful, 45, has a rich fashion CV, having been appointed Fashion Director at British title i-D in 1991 (at the age of just 19) and worked extensively with both American and Italian Vogues throughout the 2000s.

Enninful has over 481,000 followers on Instagram and is an esteemed and well-connected personality within the industry, counting designers from Donatella Versace to Marc Jacobs, as well as countless photographers and models including Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss, as friends as well as peers, so his title of being Vogue’s first black chief editor is well deserved.

In an internal announcement issued to Condé Nast employees this morning, Jonathan Newhouse, Chairman and Chief Executive of Condé Nast International, described Enninful as “an influential figure in the communities of fashion, Hollywood and music which shape the cultural zeitgeist” and cited his work under the late Italian Vogue editor Franca Sozzani as having “attained landmark status in recent cultural history.”

“One of the proudest moments of 2016 was when I was awarded an #OBE for Services To Diversity In The Fashion Industry by The Royal Princess, Anne at Buckingham Palace. If You had told my 18 year old self that this would one day be possible, He wouldn’t have believed you.”

“Edward is one of the most talented and accomplished fashion editors in the world,” Newhouse said.

“Since 2011 he has been Creative and Fashion Director of W, where he has worked with the finest photographers to produce ground-breaking, highly admired editorial work. He has more than 25 years of experience as a fashion director, starting in 1991 when he became the Fashion Director of i-D at age 19, a post he fulfilled for more than two decades.”
