A Colorado Mesa University student was killed by gunfire, school officials said Saturday.

Brett Ojiyi

In an e-mail to students, Mesa president Tim Foster said the loss of Brett Ojiyi was “from a tragic accident,” according to a Grand Junction television station.

Just after midnight Saturday, Grand Junction police said they were called to a home in the 100 block of Main Street for a report of a shooting. Officers said they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He died at the scene.

Ojiyi was a four-year member of Mesa’s football team and was a current student at the school.

A decision to play Saturday’s football game was made by university officials, coaches and players, according to a news release from the school.
