TIP Friendly Society Awards 48 Scholarships to Members and Their Children

Jamaica News: Forty eight scholarships valued at more than $2 million have been awarded to TIP Friendly Society members and their children.

Presentations were made to recipients at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels, during an awards function at the Knutsford Court Hotel, in St. Andrew,  on August 16.

Awardees included TIP members who are in their final year at an accredited tertiary institution at the undergraduate and graduate levels; members’ dependents who have met the criteria for the 2019 TIP Primary Exit Profile (PEP) scholarships; and members’ dependents who were recipients of past TIP PEP Scholarships who continue to excel at their secondary institutions.

Retired Assistant Chief Education Officer, Dr. Hixwell Douglas, who was guest speaker at the event, praised the Society for continuing to reward excellence.

“I view these awards as being symbolic on the part of TIP to identify, celebrate and nurture pockets of excellence across the island and at different levels of the education system,” Dr. Douglas said.

“Undoubtedly, this effort is designed to promote future academic excellence among high achieving students. It is clear that TIP is fully aware that the best preparation for tomorrow is helping students do their best today,” he added.

Dr. Douglas, who is visually impaired, commended the recipients for their outstanding levels of performance, imploring them to continue to strive for excellence.

Sharing his story of past failures in the education system, having been unsuccessful in all local and international examinations, Dr. Douglas said he was able to turn this around with an attitude for success, which was built on self-determination, discipline and hard work, and an attitude of gratitude.

He encouraged the scholarship recipients to “continue to reach for the top,” ensuring that their work continues to represent quality, and “that you will stamp a superior mark upon everything that is released from your hands, that whatever you say or do will bear the hallmark of excellence.”

For his part, President of TIP, Ray Howell, advised the recipients to continue to “dream big dreams,” noting that the “bigger the dream the bigger the goals you will achieve.”
