Jamaica News, Kingston: The police in August Town say they have now taken a teenage boy into custody, in connection with a freak accident which occurred on Friday, July 20, and which claimed the life of a 9-year-old girl and injured four of her family members.
The dead child has been identified as, Geana Leathing, 9-year-old, Escarpment Road Community in August Town.
Reports by the police are that about 2:20 p.m. on Friday, the accused was driving a blue 2005, Mitsubishi Conter motor truck in August Town.
On reaching a section of the Escarpment Road community, he reportedly lost control of the vehicle which crashed into a nearby house occupied by the 9-year-old girl and other family members.
The impact of the crash destroyed the board and concrete structured dwelling house and also caused serious injuries to the 9-year-old girl and four other family members which includes two males and two female.
All five victims were assisted to hospital by residents in the community. The 9-year-old died whilst being treated and the four other persons were admitted in serious but stable condition.
Following the incident, the police were summoned and after reaching the scene it was discovered that the driver of the vehicle was the teenage boy. It is reported that the teenage driver had no drivers license, neither was the vehicle allegedly licenced or insured.
It is also alleged that the teenage boy might have been driving under the influence of alcohol. He was taken into custody, and will be interviewed in the presence of a lawyer today, Monday, July 23.
