Jamaica News: Within the next four months, Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) should have a fully operational mobile application (app) that facilitates motor-vehicle registration and fitness fee payments online.
The app, designed to run on a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet, will eliminate the hassle of waiting in long lines for extended periods at TAJ locations.
It will allow persons to search for a motor vehicle using the vehicle identification or chassis number; pay registration and fitness fees; view and print payment history; be notified about registration, fitness and insurance expiry dates; and utilise a selected courier service for document delivery.
The app is being developed by eGov Jamaica Limited through its Innovation Hub division. The working prototype was presented to members of the TAJ’s team on Tuesday (Nov 20) at the e-Gov Jamaica Limited offices in St. Andrew.
Speaking in an interview with JIS News following the presentation, Chief Executive Officer, eGov Jamaica Limited, Maurice Barnes said the initiative is aimed at improving the TAJ’s customer service delivery as well as its operations.
He said the app comes with certain security features and “the data is encrypted to our back-end systems”.
“For this particular app, to log on, you will be required to have your credentials, username, email address and password, and it will not be giving you any more access to information that you are not authorised to see,” he pointed out.
“The basic infrastructure for the app is that you would add a motor vehicle, so you will have to have certain key information on that motor vehicle to add it to your profile to be able to conduct transactions on it,” he added.
Mr. Barnes said feedback from the TAJ will allow his team to tweak accordingly.
Commissioner General, Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ), Ainsley Powell said that the app “is in keeping with what we want at TAJ”.
“We are looking at innovative ways of reducing queuing time in the offices, and… this is a tremendous step in that direction,” he told JIS News.
He noted that more than 70 per cent of TAJ transactions are motor vehicle and driver’s licence-related.
“It is something that will get us to where our ultimate aim is – less line, less time, and less face-to face-interaction,” he told JIS News.
