Unrest at Cumberland High School – violent students, teachers stage protest

St. Catherine, Jamacian( McN) –  Teachers of Cumberland High School in St Catherine staged protests, withdrew services on Monday, April 10 against the indiscipline issues of the students at the school.  Many students did not show up to school today, Tuesday.

This protest which is ongoing up to press time for the second day, came after the school’s Principal Michael Brydson vehicle was reported vandalised by a third form female student who is alleged to have thrown a stone into the back windshield of his Suzuki motor vehicle, breaking it and leaving a large hole.

Also there are other allegations that a parent came to the school on Monday with an a group of people and  threatened one of the teachers.

The teachers allegedly say they will continue their protest for the week.

The principal is said to have allegedly used a ruler to hit the student who continued to break school rules, after which is vehicle was hit with the large rock.

This morning director of Safety and Security in Schools in the Ministry of Education, Coleridge Minto visited the Cumberland High School in St Catherine to intervene on the behalf of the ministry in the dispute between students and staff at the institution.

The Ministry said in a news release that it has it is alarm at the recent reports in the media, of the violent attacks being meted out to the principal and academic staff of the Cumberland High School.

“The safety and security of the staff and students at all educational institutions is of paramount importance and the Ministry will be moving swiftly to curtail this untenable situation,” the Ministry’s news release stated.

The Ministry of Education pointed out that Assistant Superintendent of Police, Minto would meet with the principal and staff,  accompanied by a high level team, led by Patrice Supria, acting regional director, from the Education Ministry.

At press time the school and the Ministry of education are locked into a meeting.
