Jamaica Crime News, St James: 26-year-old Melissa Harriott, the St. James bartender who was remanded into custody when she appeared before the St. James Parish Court on Friday , February 22, on charges of Child Stealing, is booked to reappear in court today. Monday February 25.
Harriot was remanded into custody when she appeared in court on Wednesday, January 16, because she had no legal representation, but when she reappeared on Tuesday, January 22, she hired the services Attorney-At-Law, Martyn Thomas, and was granted bail in the sum of $350,000.
Harriot and her boyfriend were both taken into custody by the police in Montego Bay, St James, on Sunday morning, January 6, when the stolen three-months-old baby was discovered at their home in Norwood community.
Reports by the Freeport police are that about 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, a team of officers attached to the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offenses and Child Abuse (CISOCA) received information that 3-months-old, Vemesha Evans ,who was kidnapped from her mother Latoya White, on the compound of the Cornwall Regional Hospital was spotted at a premises in Norwood community.
The police carried out an operation at a house located at a section of Norwood known as Greens, where Harriot was seen in possession of the stolen baby.
The accused reportedly stole the child on Friday , January 4, after the child’s mother took her to the Cornwall Regional hospital.
While on the compound, the baby’s mother had to visit the restroom, so she asked Harriot to tend to her baby until she returned, but upon her return, her baby and Harriot could not be found.
