Jamaica Crime News, St James: 26 -year-old Melissa Harriott, the St. James, bartender who was recently arrested and charged by the St. James police for stealing a baby, was remanded into custody after she appeared in the St James Parish Court on Wednesday, January 16.
Harriot who was charged with Child Stealing last Wednesday afternoon was ordered to return to court on January 22.
The presiding Judge Sandria Wong-Small rescheduled the case in order for Harriot to get legal representation.
Harriot and her common-law husband were both taken into custody by the police in Montego Bay, St James, on Sunday morning, January 6, when a stolen three-months-old baby was discovered at their home in the Norwood community.
Both suspects were taken into custody and questioned, but there was not enough evidence to place criminal charges on the boyfriend, so he was later released.
Reports by the Freeport police are that about 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, a team of officers attached to the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offenses and Child Abuse (CISOCA) received information that 3-months-old Vemesha Evans, who was kidnapped from her mother Latoya White, on the compound of the Cornwall Regional Hospital was spotted at a premises in Norwood community.
The police acted swiftly and carried out an operation at a section of Norwood community known as Greens, where a premises was searched, and Harriot was seen in possession of the stolen baby, and she was arrested.
The accused woman stole the child on Friday, January 4, after the child’s mother took her to the Cornwall Regional Hospital.
While on the compound, the baby mother had to visit the restroom, and not wanting to carry her small child inside the restroom, she asked Harriot if she could hold her baby until she returned.
Upon her return, she could find neither her child nor Harriot.
