Jamaica Crime News, St James: Our news team has learnt that 26-year-old, Melissa Harriott, the St. James bartender who appeared before the St. James Parish Court, on Tuesday, January 22, on charges of Stealing a baby, was granted bail in the sum of $350,000.
Harriot who was remanded into custody when she last appeared in the St James Parish Court on Wednesday, January 16, because she had no legal representation, but on this her third appearance she was represented by Attorney At Law, Martyn Thomas.
She is booked to reappear in Court on February, 25.
Harriot and her common-law husband were both taken into custody by the police in Montego Bay, St James, on Sunday morning, January 6, when a stolen three-months-old baby was discovered at their home in the Norwood community.
Both suspects were taken into custody and questioned, but there was not enough evidence to place criminal charges on the boyfriend, so he was later released.
Reports by the Freeport police are that about 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, a team of officers attached to the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offenses and Child Abuse (CISOCA) received information that 3-months-old Vemesha Evans, who was kidnapped from her mother Latoya White, on the compound of the Cornwall Regional Hospital was spotted at a premises in Norwood community.
The police acted swiftly and carried out an operation at a section of Norwood community known as Greens, where a premises was searched and Harriot was seen in possession of the stolen baby, and she was arrested.
The accused woman stole the child on Friday, January 4, after the child’s mother took her to the Cornwall Regional Hospital.
While on the compound, the baby mother had to visit the restroom and not wanting to carry her small child inside the restroom, she asked Harriot if she could hold her baby until she returned.
Upon her return, Harriot and the child were missing.
