Jamaica Crime News, St Andrew: The St. Andrew police have reported that they have now officially charged a businessman who hails from the parish, in connection with the first murder to be recorded across the island in 2019.
The accused has been identified as Marvin Markland, a 32-year-old businessman of Goldsmith Villa in Kingston 7. he has been charged with the murder of 34-year-old Omar Johnson, a construction worker of Peyton Place district in August Town.
Reports by the Hunts Bay Police are that about 8:55 a.m. on Tuesday, January 1, Johnson was walking along the roadway in Peyton Place, when he was approached by two men armed with high-powered weapons.
The men reportedly opened fire hitting Johnson multiple times to his upper body before making their escape in the area on foot.
Residents in the area summoned the police and upon their arrival, the wounded man was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Following an investigation, Markland was taken into custody and was charged on Saturday, January 12, with murder, Illegal possession of firearm, and illegal possession of ammunition.
