Jamaica News: The Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport has provided $2 million to Netball Jamaica for the staging of the 2018 ‘Sunshine Series’.
The funds were granted through the Sports Development Foundation (SDF). The Ministry has also underwritten the cost of the entertainment package for the half-time shows for the international five-match netball test.
Scheduled for the National Indoor Sports Centre in October, the Sunshine Series will see Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls competing against the Calypso Girls of Trinidad and Tobago and reigning Commonwealth Champions, the England Roses, for the Margaret Beckford Cup. The game days are October 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15.
In her remarks at the cheque presentation and press launch at the Ministry’s Trafalgar Road offices in Kingston on Wednesday (October 3), Portfolio Minister, Hon. Olivia Grange, welcomed the guest teams and invited members of the public to support the series.
“Jamaica is being treated to another series, thanks to Netball Jamaica, which I am sure will produce high-class, exciting netball when the Sunshine Girls, the England Roses and Trinidad and Tobago’s Calypso Girls take on each other at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston,” she said.
“All of Jamaica is proud of the Sunshine Girls, who are showing more and more class by their recent performances, and we are convinced that World Championship for you is just a few passes away,” she said.
President of Netball Jamaica, Dr. Paula Daley-Morris, who brought greetings, said that the 2018 Sunshine Series promises to be exciting and will provide great family-oriented entertainment.
“They (Sunshine Girls) are eager to play at home as they last did in 2015. They like to entertain their home crowd and are anxiously looking forward to taking the courts for this five-match test series,” she said.
Dr. Daley-Morris noted that the team has its sights set on the 2019 Netball World Cup, to be staged in Liverpool, England, from July 12 to 21.
Tickets for the Sunshine Series are available at Netball Jamaica offices, Suite 9, National Arena, Independence Park, Kingston. They can also be purchased online at www.ticketpal.com.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of Netball Jamaica. In honour of this milestone, the Sunshine Series cup has been named the Margaret Beckford Cup in tribute to the first president of the organisation.
