SENTENCING FOR THREE POLICE OFFICERS CONVICTED POSTPONED

THE SENTENCING OF THE THREE POLICE OFFICERS WHO WERE RECENTLY FOUND GUILTY ON MANSLAUGHTER CHARGES, IN CONNECTION WITH THE DEATH OF 16-YEAR-OLD IMMACULATE CONCEPTION HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT, VANESSA KIRKLAND, HAS BEEN PUSHED BACK FOR MONDAY, MAY 28.

THIS IS THE THIRD TIME THAT THE SENTENCING OF THE THREE OFFICERS, HAS BEEN POSTPONED SINCE THE PAST MONTH, HAVING PREVIOUSLY BEEN SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 5, AND MAY 17.

A DELAY IN THE SENTENCING CAME AFTER THE PROSECUTION WERE GIVEN MORE TIME, THIS TO RESPOND TO SUBMISSION MADE BY DEFENSE ATTORNEY’S PETER CHAMPAGNIE, NADINE GUY, AND OSWART SENIOR-SMITH.

THE ACCUSED CONSTABLES, ANDREWAIN SMITH, DURVIN HAYES AND ANNA-KAY BAILEY WERE ON FEBRUARY 8TH, FOUND GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER, BY A SEVEN MEMBER JURY, IN THE HOME CIRCUIT COURT IN KINGSTON.

AND SINCE THEN, THEIR SENTENCING HAVE BEEN POSTPONED ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS.

REPORTS PRESENTED IN COURT ARE ARE THAT ON MARCH 20, 2012, THE CONSTABLES DROVE TO NORMAN LANE, IN KINGSTON, AND FIRED UPON A SUZUKI SWIFT MOTOR CAR WHICH WAS PARKED ALONG THE ROADWAY.

FOLLOWING THE SHOOTING, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE TEEN WHO WAS IN THE VEHICLE, ALONG WITH SIX OTHER PASSENGERS, WAS SHOT AND KILLED.

IN THEIR DEFENSE, THE CONVICTED OFFICERS STATES THAT THEY WERE FIRED UPON FIRSTLY BY ARMED MEN, WHO WERE ALLEGEDLY INSIDE THE SAID MOTOR CAR, AND THEY WERE FORCED TO RETURN THE FIRE.
