Jamaica News, Montego Bay: Sam Sharpe Square for several years since it’s establishment, continues to be a chill spot for Montegonians, especially those of the working class.
It is not a rare case to encounter elder men and women hanging out in the square especially in the evenings, the crowd usually begins to thicken whenever it reaches 5 p.m., because at this time majority of workers leave work.
“This is the safest place to hang out at evening times… there is no fuss or fight, only little politics will get overheated at times as you know that there is a two-sided political party and each one holds their belief…” said Nigel Samuels, popularly known as, “Singer man”, who has been using the square as a chill spot for the past 25 years.
Wilfred Morris another person who has been using the square for over 40 years says: “I have been hanging out here for well over 40 years from the concrete seats were placed in the Square until Raynor King and Delbert Christie change the place…the place is called Elders Corners and its Pure older people hang out here who are well-disciplined. All type of people hang out here Masons, Plumber, Tilers, Mechanics, Vendors, Journalist, Photographers, Drivers and Footballers”.
While Sam Sharpe Square continues to be a safe place for its users it is hoped that it remains this way and that soon many other people will enjoy along with its usual users the benefits of the square.
