St James Social And Economic Development Trust Calls On Government For Review Tribunal To Assist Detainees.

Chairman of the St James Social and Economic Development Trust, Huntley Medley, on Thursday morning made an appeal to the government of Jamaica to speedily set a Review Tribunal in place to assist persons detained.

Mr Medley was speaking to reporters following reports that the Freeport lockup now has over 200 detainees and that number keeps on growing each hour.  He pointed out that the security team needs to provide adequate representation and assistance to persons who have been locked up whether through Legal Aid or a proper Attorney-at-Law.

He mentioned that he is calling on the government to also ensure that all officers within the State of Emergency are operating within the law and respect the rights of all citizens.

Mr Medley further pointed out that he hopes a Review Tribunal that is supposed to accompany such a State of Emergency will be set up quickly because with the right must come responsibility by the citizens as well as the State.
