Jamaica Crime News, Montego Bay: Residents in and around the community of Mount Salem in Montego Bay, St James on Wednesday, October 17, expressed their joy after learning that the Zone of Special Operation has been extended in the community.
On Tuesday the House of Representatives approved the resolution to have the Zone of Special Operation extended until the next 60 days.
The resolution was moved by Prime Minister Andrew Holness and commenced immediately.
On Friday, August 1, 2017, the Government of Jamaica declared the Zone of Special Operation in the Community of Mount Salem in St James.
During that period, it posed a slight negative impact in the minds of most persons, the community of Mount Salem, is the only community in Jamaica which has two existing Councilors.
Mount Salem community is divided into two divisions, with Councilor Richard Vernon, who represents the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP), in charge of one area, while Kerry Thomas, who represents the People
National Party (PNP), in charge of the other.
The residents started to entwined and relate freely to the member of the security forces.
Also, residents from one section of the area, are now able to interact with other community members, from other sections of the community, without the fear of violence.
Since the ZOSO as being imposed in Mount Salem, the Joint Security Forces have eased the tension from the shoulders of residents living in the community and they can move about much more freely now.
Residents say they are now realizing that they were not held against their will, but there were protocols that they needed to follow and since then, the professionalism of the security personnel have resulted in gradual success between themselves and the residents.
One Resident pointed out that, prior to the Zone of Special Operation, Mount Salem was rocked with a number of gang flare-up and murders, but now residents are very thankful that they can move about much more freely, without having to be in fear.
