Jamaica News: In recognition of the Jamaica Reggae Girlz’s historic qualification for the 2019 World Cup, His Worship the Mayor of Kingston, Senator Councillor Delroy Williams, has presented each member of the team with Keys to the City of Kingston.

The Keys were handed over on Monday (December 17), on the lawns of Flag Circle in downtown Kingston.

Mr. Williams congratulated the women on their outstanding achievement and said they are helping to make Kingston become the Pearl of the Antilles.

“The city of Kingston is really on a mission to be the Pearl of the Antilles, the light of the Caribbean Sea and a prominent international city. You [Reggae Girlz] who have done well, have put a major pillar in that path by qualifying for the World Cup in 2019 in France,” Mr. Williams said.

For her part, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, announced that the Reggae Girlz would also be receiving Keys to Spanish Town and St. Ann’s Bay this week.

“It is the first time that any team sport or any sport personality would be receiving so many keys to so many towns and cities in Jamaica. I hope you will be enriched for that and you will be motivated to bring home the [World] Cup,” Ms. Grange said.

Team Captain, Jamaica Reggae Girlz, Konya Plummer, delivered words of gratitude on behalf of the team.

“It has been a long hard road to this point and to receive this gift, we are deeply humbled… . Thank you all for celebrating with us. Thank you for your undying support Jamaica,” she said.

The senior Reggae Girlz secured their place in women’s football showpiece event in October with a penalty shoot-out win over Costa Rica, taking third place in the CONCACAF Women’s Championship and a spot in the World Cup.

As a result, Jamaica became the first Caribbean country to qualify for the Women’s World Cup, and the first to send teams to both the male and female World Cup tournaments, after the Reggae Boyz’s famous qualification to the 1998 World Cup, which also took place in France.
