Prisoner Stabbed to Death during Dispute at Negril Lock-Up, in Westmoreland

The Negril police in Westmoreland and investigators from the Independent Commission of Investigation, have commenced an investigation into the death of a prisoner, who was stabbed by another prisoner at the Negril police lock-up, in the parish on Friday night.

The dead inmate has been identified as 24-year-old Rico Brevett, unemployed of a Red Ground address, also in Negril, Westmoreland.

Reports by the police are that about 9:00 pm, on Friday, Brevett and the 28-year-old accused who hails from Lucea, in Hanover, and who were both inmates at the lock-up, requested to use the bathroom and were later released from their respective cells.

Both men allegedly got involved in a physical confrontation, when the accused used a sharp jammer to stab Brevett multiple times to the regions of his chest.

The cell guards overheard Brevett calling for help and rushed to investigate, and they saw the accused standing over Brevett with the sharp object in his hand.

The officers had to use brute-force in order to get the accused away from Brevett, and it was later revealed that both men were suffering from wounds to their upper bodies.

They were rushed to the Savanna-la-mar Hospital, where Brevett was pronounced dead, and the accused inmate treated at hospital and admitted under police guard.

In the meanwhile, the Independent Commission of Investigation revealed that they too are conducting an investigation into the incident.
