Jamaica News: Minister of Transport and Mining, Hon. Robert Montague, is calling on owners and operators of public passenger vehicles (PPVs) to invest in global positioning system (GPS) trackers.
Addressing a Transportation Reform Proposal Consultation hosted by the Transport Authority at Hotel Four Seasons in St. Andrew on Wednesday (November 14), Minister Montague said the trackers make it easier to pinpoint and recover stolen vehicles.
“A proposal that we have on the table is that all PPV-licensed operators must have a vehicle locator – a GPS locator fitted on their vehicle, and we want to ask the insurance companies and the banks to insist upon that with us,” he said.
“We are saying, fit a GPS locator on the vehicle, and we are putting together the standards of the locators. We are working to establish a geospatial map, so that we can locate every operator in the public passenger transport sector,” he added.
He noted that the GPS trackers can also help clear PPV operators who are falsely accused of wrongdoing.
Minister Montague told the meeting that a free taxi locator and safety application for smartphones are also being looked into, where Jamaicans will be able to access cab service online without having to call the taxi companies.
He noted that in today’s society, Jamaicans should be able to use their mobile devices to request taxi service.
“[If] I’m at home and I call a cab, I should be able to see the cab… the cab number [and] to see how far the cab is away from me… We live in the modern age, and we need to bring the industry up to speed,” Minister Montague said.
The aim of the Transportation Reform Proposal Consultation was to discuss the 16-point Transportation Reform Proposal, which was announced in May with the objective of reforming the public transportation system.
The session was the third in a series, with the other two held with public transport associations, and government stakeholders such as the municipal corporations, National Works Agency (NWA) and the Island Traffic Authority.
