Jamaica Crime News, St Catherine: A St Catherine Police Constable who was arrested and charged with double murder several weeks ago, was granted bail in the sum of $750,000 when he appeared in the St Catherine parish Court earlier this week.

Constable Michael Lawrence is facing charges of murder committed against Richard Ellis and Michael Smith in the year 2011.

Reports by the police are that in March 2011, Constable Lawrence and a colleague were carrying out spot checks along a section of the Williamsfield main road in Riversdale, when they signaled the driver of a motor car to stop.

The police reported that the driver complied and four men armed with handguns exited the vehicle and pointed handguns in the directions of the police.

The lawmen took evasive action and opened fire hitting two of the men.

Residents in the area gave other versions of what took place, which resulted in the DPP and the BSI ruling against the officer.

According to alleged eyewitnesses, the lawmen stopped the vehicle and handcuffed both men.

They then placed Ellis and Smith to lay face down, before killing them in cold blood.

Constable Lawrence is booked to reappear in Court on November 29.
