Police Officer Charged with Illegal Possession of Firearm

Jamaica Crime News, St Catherine: A police officer who is based in St Catherine and another man, who were arrested in connection with the seizure of an assault rifle and a handgun in St Catherine, on Tuesday night, October 2, have now been officially charged.

One Detective told our news team that both men have been charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition, but their names will be released at a later date, as both men are expected to face a series of identification parades.

Reports by the St Catherine police are that about 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, a team of detectives attached to the Counter Terrorism and Organized Crime Division, carried out an operation at a section of Myers Lane in Newland, St Catherine.

During the operation, the officer and the other accused were both seen at a premises in the area.

A  searched was carried out and an AK-47 assault rifle loaded with fifteen 7.62 rounds and a 9mm Taurus semi-automatic pistol, loaded with fifteen live rounds were seized.

Both men were taken into custody.
