Police Officer and Mentally Ill Ex-Soldier Shot and Injured in St Stand-Off, In Portmore, St Catherine

The Portmore police in St Catherine are reporting that the police officer and a mentally ill ex-Jamaica defence force soldier, who were wounded during an exchange of gunfire, and a stand-off at the soldier’s home in Portmore, St Catherine, on Tuesday, November 2, remain at hospital in serious but stable conditions.

Reports are that shortly after 1:00 am, residents living at Cumberland Meadows in Portmore, alerted the police that the mentally ill ex-soldier, identified as 35-year-old Dane Johnson, was armed with a handgun and shooting at community members.

The lawmen say they rushed to the scene and upon arrival, they were fired upon by the retired army man, resulting in one police officer receiving a gunshot to his leg.

The lawmen further stated that they returned the fire, which also resulted in Johnson being shot and injured, but he managed to run back to his house and barricaded himself inside.

The standoff which lasted more than an hour, ended after the wife of the mentally ill ex-soldier was contacted, and she assisted in convincing him to surrender to the police.

Johnson and the wounded police officer were taken to hospital, where he was admitted under police guard, and the officer was treated and admitted.
