Jamaica News: Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, is reiterating his call for members of the public to provide information on criminal activity to the police.
“As I continue to say, information is vital to the overall success of operations on the ground.
“If you know where the guns are, please do not hesitate to pass on the information to the police. We don’t want any dons in our communities. We don’t celebrate them, and we don’t encourage them,” he said.
The Prime Minister was addressing a town hall meeting held at the Closed Harbour (Dump Up) Beach Park in Montego Bay, St. James, on Thursday (November 22).
Responding to a question regarding business operations in communities where the State of Public Emergency (SOE) has been declared, the Prime Minister said that the security forces have been “very conscious” as it relates to the issue of equity “and also the need to administer the law right across the board”.
He noted that while the security personnel are expected to exercise discretion from time to time, this must and should be done without the appearance of a double standard.
“I want to make it clear that no instructions have been given to relax the rules in any particular area while enforcing them in others,” he noted.
“There is one rule that goes for everybody, and it has already been gazetted. We cannot have a situation where some persons are penalised while others are not,” he added.
The Prime Minister declared an SOE in the parish of St. James on January 18. It was the first of two, with the second one declared in St. Catherine North on March 18.
The Constitution provides that a period of public emergency can be declared by a Proclamation if the Governor-General is satisfied that action has been taken or is immediately threatened by any person or body of persons of such a nature and on so extensive a scale as to be likely to endanger public safety.
Mr. Holness said that the state of emergency was called to create an environment that is safe and secure for everyone, adding that the Government will not relent in its quest to achieve its stated goal.
