Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced a State of Public Emergency in St Catherine on Friday, due to 12 current gang disputes that have resulted in multiple homicides and shootings.
He made the declaration at Jamaica House during a press conference.
According to Holness, the fear that is plaguing some communities is a direct consequence of the organized criminal operations of gangs, guns, and the young men who are being recruited by these groups.
The PM said that the government cannot sit by and see innocent Jamaicans going about their business, having to be scurrying for their lives.
He further added that one of the most important rights of Jamaican citizens is the right to life.
