Notorious Mexican Drug Lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman Found Guilty

NEW YORK — Mexico’s most notorious drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, was convicted Tuesday of running an industrial-scale smuggling operation after a three-month trial packed with Hollywood-style tales of grisly killings, political payoffs, cocaine hidden in jalapeno cans, jewel-encrusted guns and a naked escape with his mistress through a tunnel.

“This conviction is a victory for every family that’s lost a loved one to the black hole of addiction,” a triumphant United States Attorney Richard Donohue said outside federal court in Brooklyn, shortly after the verdict. He added that Guzman made billions off a national drug crisis in the U.S. that’s been declared a public Health Emergency

Noting that El Chapo faces life in prison, he declared, “It is a life sentence from which there is no escape and no return,” a reference to the drug lord’s two, successful escapes from Mexican prisons.

It’s expected El Chapo will land at the super-max federal prison facility in Florence, Colorado.
