Jamaica News: The deadline for nominations for the Jamaican High Commission’s Windrush Legacy publication has been extended to October 31, 2018.

The Legacy publication is a major project of the High Commission to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the SS Empire Windrush, which was a watershed moment in the history of a multi-cultural Britain.

The publication, which will be launched during a Windrush celebration and Caribbean Family Festival in Nottingham on October 28, 2018, aims to honour the achievements of 500 Jamaicans who have contributed to the development of the United Kingdom (UK).

A key highlight of the celebrations in Nottingham will be a friendly match between the Nottingham Forest Ladies and the senior Reggae Girls, to be held at the City Ground, on October 28, with kick-off at 3:00p.m.

Jamaica’s High Commissioner, His Excellency Seth George Ramocan, as well as officials from the sporting fraternity in the UK and Jamaica, are expected to be in attendance.

High Commissioner Ramocan, in encouraging nominations for the publication, said “Britain and Jamaica owe a debt of gratitude to the pioneers and trailblazing brave men and women of the Windrush generation and their descendants, who ventured to Britain to help in the rebuilding efforts following the devastation of the Second World War.”

“They faced many obstacles but persevered and because of their efforts, Britain is today a strong multi-cultural society,” Mr. Ramocan said.

The High Commissioner noted that the Windrush generation, their children and grandchildren, continue to play important roles in many facets of British society, including the sciences, education, health, social services, the arts, entertainment and sports.

“Let us celebrate them through this publication so they can be an inspiration to current and future generations,” the High Commissioner said.

He encouraged Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica to share the information among their networks to ensure that nominations are submitted, not only from London but from the various regions across the United Kingdom.

The publication which was first announced by High Commissioner Ramocan as part of last year’s Jamaica 55 celebrations, will be available on Windrush day, June 22, 2019.
